Cello Solo (Before it all began)
One of my earliest pieces, shaped by the sound-world of Michael Gordon and Arvo Pärt. It is minimalist, and demanding in its restraint and in its unified sense of structure, asking of the player both a high level of technique — double stops on the cello — and long-range linear thinking. At the same time it is very accessible and emotionally gripping. The minimalism of the work is also its strength and its challenge: the repeated yet asymmetric phrases open up a large space, and yet the piece refuses to become meditative, owing to its dramatic dynamic changes.
היצירה לצ'לו סולו היא אחת היצירות המוקדמות ביותר שלי, ומושפעת מעולם הסאונד של מייקל גורדון ושל ארוו פארט. היא מינימליסטית ומאתגרת בהיפוק שלה ובתחושה המבנית האחידה שלה, ודורשת מהנגן גם יכולת טכנית גבוהה — נגינת סלילים כפולים בצ'לו — וגם חשיבה ליניארית ארוכת-טווח. עם זאת, היא נגישה מאוד ותופסת מבחינה רגשית. המינימליזם של היצירה הוא גם כוחה וגם האתגר שבה: המשפטים החוזרים אך הא-סימטריים פותחים מרחב גדול, ובכל זאת היצירה מסרבת להפוך למדיטטיבית, בשל שינויי הדינמיקה הדרמטיים.
