Getting Closer

I called this piece Getting Closer for the process it enacts: a gradual drawing-together of two different characters, or two opposing elements, represented by the two instruments. It was written in 2006, originally for oboe and piano — though from the very beginning I imagined it equally for oboe and electric guitar; it has also been performed with soprano saxophone. The oboe part is written almost entirely in the dodecaphonic method: its theme is built from four twelve-tone rows played in succession, then developed by the usual means — retrograde and inversion, transposition and so on. The piano part, by contrast, grows out of the world of rock — its rhythms and harmony — and even borrows dynamic effects from electronic music. On the face of it the oboe stands for the more complex, sophisticated side and the piano for the more energetic, emotional one; but over the course of the piece the two draw steadily closer, exchanging roles and borrowing each other's motifs, until they merge completely in the final section. Commissioned by the oboist Adi Kedem.
