eight cellos (cello octet); also a version for string orchestra

Landscape in Fume

When Gil Shohat, then musical director of the Israel Festival, approached me with the idea of writing a cello octet for the festival, he suggested the work address the subject of the Holocaust. My first, immediate reaction was recoil and refusal: how can one address so difficult and charged a subject in so short a work, and can one write about the Holocaust “to commission” at all? Nevertheless, after much thought, I decided to take it on, for one important reason: refusing to address the Holocaust seemed to me worse than addressing it inadequately. Precisely because it is unbearable to most of us, this subject is often met with avoidance, a conspiracy of silence — as if “those who were there cannot convey it to others, and those who were not admit in advance that they cannot understand.”

Even so, my initial instinct held, and from the outset I chose an indirect, partial, slightly abstract point of reference, despite its being bound to words. I chose to respond to a short poem by Itamar Yaoz-Kest from the collection Landscape in Fume — one single, private moment, however hard, from a period and a time I cannot grasp in their entirety. Both the poem and my piece try to convey a view from the side, on the one hand, and an enormous emotional charge on the other.

The text (Itamar Yaoz-Kest, from Landscape in Fume / chapters of Bergen-Belsen, 1961; trans. Schulamit Chava Halevy): “On the day of ruins / the lovely voiced / bird sat / upon a cloud / looking into the garden / the wind / passed through the flames / someone / sang.”

Text

Itamar Yaoz-Kest, from 'Landscape in Fume' / chapters of Bergen-Belsen, 1961

הרוח בין הלהבות;
שר.
On the day of ruins
the lovely voiced
bird sat
upon a cloud
looking into the garden
the wind
passed through the flames
someone
sang.
