White Strings
More than once I have heard artists say of their work, “this is a winter piece” — meaning music that is somewhat melancholy, heavy, and so on. But sometimes one wants to hear music in summer too, and the Keshet Eilon commission was an excellent opportunity to try to create such music. For me white is a summer colour — pure, light-reflecting and full of joy — and that is what I tried to express. The scoring is a little unusual: sixteen “white and pure” violins and three double basses, which, as their name suggests, give the violins a little “contra.” The title White Strings also means, on the model of “white keys,” notes without flats or sharps; these notes make up a substantial part of the piece, which was written under the inspiration of a song by the rock band Ministry.
